What is it and what symptoms does it cause?

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerve roots. It typically presents with pain, heaviness, or weakness in the legs when walking, forcing the patient to stop (neurogenic claudication). It often improves when sitting or leaning forward. It is more common in older individuals due to degenerative spinal changes.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on characteristic symptoms and physical examination. Lumbar MRI is the test of choice, as it allows assessment of the degree of narrowing and nerve involvement. In some cases, CT scans provide additional information about bone structures.

How is it treated?

Initial treatment includes rehabilitation, specific exercises, and pain medication. When symptoms significantly limit quality of life, decompressive surgery (laminectomy) may be considered, which involves enlarging the spinal canal to relieve pressure on nerves. In some cases, spinal fixation is added to stabilize the spine if instability is present.
